How to Wash Silk Pillowcase: Your Complete Care Guide to Wash, Dry & Store Right

Initially, I wasn't really aware of what to do to keep my silk pillowcase as nice after I switched to my first one. My only concerns were how much softer and smoother the silk felt on my face when I went to sleep and waking up with hair that looked less like a bird's nest. It wasn't until the day I was doing laundry and sat in front of my washing machine that I realized I would need to clean my silk pillowcase, and I couldn't remember ever cleaning anything like this before!

While many people feel that silk is too dramatic and requires special care, I soon learned from experience that it doesn't require any special care whatsoever; it's just not meant to be worn like a normal pillowcase made from cotton, which can be washed and worn without concern.

The Biggest Mindset Shift

One incredible realization was that silk reacts better to being dealt softly in contrast to forcefully. We utilize hot water and vigorous detergent to give ourselves the impression that we are cleaning cotton but with silk there isn’t a need for these methods, using either of these methods lead to nylon breaking down much sooner than would have otherwise occurred.

After switching my mindset around washing from “heavy” to “light or bright,” I have simplified everything in relation to my care for my silk pillowcases. This one small adjustment has completely changed my opinion regarding the way that I maintain my silk pillowcases!

What I stopped doing:

  • Using hot water

  • Adding strong or heavily scented detergents

  • Twisting or wringing the fabric

  • Throwing it in with heavy laundry loads

How Often Is Too Often?

I used to be hesitant about washing my silk pillow case because I thought that washing them often would wear out the silk fabric quicker due to the amount of time you wash them. However, if I leave the oil and residue/oil on my silk pillow cases, they will feel and look as though they had NOT been washed often enough.

On average, I now wash my silk pillowcases once per week to prevent them from getting dirty without overusing them! If I’ve used hair oil, heavy serums, or slept through a hot night, I don’t wait. Silk actually holds up better with regular gentle cleaning than with long gaps followed by aggressive washing.

I wash sooner when:

  • I’ve used overnight hair oil

  • I’ve applied thick night creams

  • The weather has been hot and humid

  • I’ve been sweating at night

My Real-Life Hand Washing Routine

The hand washing process seemed like it was going to be an inconvenience until I actually did it. In terms of time to wash your hands, it's pretty quick, and it can be fairly soothing. I fill the sink with cool water and put a small amount of a mild liquid detergent in the sink and then allow the pillowcase to soak for a few minutes.

Once soaked, I gently move the pillowcase around in the water using my hands as though you're rinsing a piece of delicate fruit. There is no scrubbing, and no twisting. After rinsing well with cool water until it feels clean, the entire process is less than ten minutes to complete, and this is the best way that I know of how to wash a silk pillowcase without any fears of damaging it.

My simple hand-wash steps look like this:

  • Cool water only

  • A small amount of gentle detergent

  • Light swishing, no rubbing

  • Thorough rinse with cool water

When I Let the Washing Machine Help

There are times when I really don't feel like hand washing anything, and on those days I machine wash my silk pillowcase, but I do it differently than how I wash other items. I turn the silk pillowcase inside out, place it inside a mesh laundry bag, and use the delicate cycle at cold temperature with low speed for spinning. Additionally, I NEVER machine wash my silk pillowcase with heavier fabrics like towels or jeans because excessive friction is the biggest cause of damage to silk from being washed—not just from the washing process.

This method allows me to wash my silk pillowcase the right way even when I am extremely busy.

The Detergent Detail That Matters

In the beginning, one of my biggest blunders was to wash my silk pillowcases with regular detergent. While they did not get destroyed with regular detergent, they did lose a little bit of their feel, but I can see a significant difference now that I have switched to a mild detergent specifically made for delicates!

Remember that strong chemicals are unnecessary when washing silk. In fact, they slowly strip away the softness that makes silk special in the first place. Now I skip fabric softener too, silk is already soft on its own.

Drying: The Step That Deserves Patience

If there’s one part of silk care that really can’t be rushed, it’s drying. I never use a dryer. Heat can cause silk pillows to lose their quality.

Instead of drying my pillowcases in the dryer, I lay them flat on a towel and gently squeeze out most of the water. I then hang my pillowcases to dry in an air-conditioned room, out of direct sunlight (the sun will fade the colour of the silk). This process takes longer than using a dryer, but my silk pillowcases are fluffy when dried this way and look very polished.

Little Things That Help Silk Last Longer

Over time, I've learned a lot of little things to help extend the life of my silk pillowcases. One thing that I have noticed is that I do not sleep on my silk pillowcases with wet hair. I also let heavy skincare products absorb before sleeping. Rotating between two pillowcases helps too — it gives each one a break between washes.

None of these things are complicated, but together they support everything you’re doing when learning how to wash silk pillowcase properly.

Small habits that make a big difference:

  • Avoid sleeping with soaking wet hair

  • Let skincare absorb before bed

  • Rotate between pillowcases

  • Keep sharp objects away from silk

Storage Isn’t Just an Afterthought

When I wash my silk pillowcase, I will put it on a linen lined dry, clean pillow (both sides), also keep it in the coolest driest environment away from plastic bags (as the plastic bags may trap moisture), and store it so that it has some kind of air to breathe. While it is just a small piece of silk, it allows me to maintain that silky soft feeling of my silk pillowcase between uses.

Best storage tips:

  • Store in a cool, dry place

  • Use breathable fabric storage bags if possible

  • Avoid plastic containers

  • Fold gently instead of hanging

Why the Extra Care Feels Worth It

After developing a new habit of caring for silk, it is simple to keep doing. After several times washing/buying my pillowcase I still get to enjoy the softness, comfort, and beauty of my pillowcase every night when sleeping on my pillow; it allows me to sleep in a very comfortable beautiful manner (just like before).

It's not really about being careful but just wanting something you love and enjoying it while you have it! A silk pillowcase from The Harmony Silk can stay soft, elegant, and part of your nightly comfort for a long time.
